Purple Action at the Green Party Conference
(General)
We will be promoting the conference motion to support the AV referendum (below) and recruiting activists. We will be based on Unlock Democracy's stall as well as leafleting around conference and talking to all those who want to get involved. To help out please drop by the stall and pick up some leaflets. Clare Coatman will be coordinating the action Friday - Sunday.
The motion before conference is as follows:
Conference:
...1) Reaffirms its policy commitment to proportional representation a sthe only fair way of electing politicians to office.
2) Greatly regrets that the coalition Government, by failing to give the British people a referendum on proportional representation, has failed to embrace real electoral reform.
3) Notes that nevertheless the 'Alternative Vote' is fairer than' First Past the Post' in that it does require candidates to assemble amajority of votes case before they are elected.
4) Believes furthermore AV has the additional benefits of removing the 'wasted vote' argument and the perceived need for 'tactical voting', as well as opening up the arguments for further electoral reform inthe future.
5) Resolves that the Green Party will support AV in any referendum where proportional representation is not an option. Conference asks the Green Party Executive to join the official campaign for AV in there ferendum, but not to commit substantial party resources to the campaign.
Proposed by Jean Lambert.
Seconded by Rupert Read.
Signed also by Adrian Ramsay and Darren Johnson.
